The computer restarted unexpectedly in Windows 10 / 11 (fix)

If you have got the message “The Computer Restarted Unexpectedly or Encountered an Unexpected Error. … To install Windows, click “OK” to restart the computer, and then restart the installation” during installation or upgrade , you are not alone. In this post we will try to fix the problem by trying several working methods.

Fix 1 – Using Registry

If you are right now on the error screen, just try this.

1 – On your screen just press Shift + F10 using your keyboard. A black command prompt window will come up on screen.

(Note: – If your Shift+F10 doesn’t work try using the Shift+FN+F10 )

2 – Write regedit on it. Hit Enter key. The registry editor window will open up.

3 – Once the registry editor window appears, just browse to the following location using the left menu.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • SYSTEM
  • Setup
  • Status
  • ChildCompletion

4 – In the right side, just locate setup.exe.

5 – Double click on it.

6 – Now, just make sure that value data is set to 3.

If its not 3 , then just change it to 3.

7 – Just close down the registry editor and finally restart your computer.

Fix 3 – Run Startup / Automatic Repair

Let windows automatically try to repair and fix your problem during your installation. You can try startup / automatic repair.

1 – Insert your windows 10 bootable media used for installation.

2 – Press any key to continue.

3 – On the screen given below, just choose repair your Computer.

4 – When asked to choose an option in the next screen, just click on Troubleshoot.

5 – After that , click on Advanced option.

6 – Now, click on Automatic Repair or Startup Repair.

Fix 3 – Format your hard drive

Warning: This method will delete all your data including files as well as settings on your windows 10 PC.

1.  Just  press Shift + F10 on your keyboard  to open command prompt window on the screen.

2.  Now, just write down the commands given below one by one and keep hitting enter key to execute them.

select volume 1 
format fs=ntfs quick label=test

Note: In the third step, select volume 1 command is there because the window os is installed in volume 1. If your window is installed in any other volume , select that volume only.

3. Write exit and hit Enter to exit the Command Prompt window.

4. just reboot your computer

5. Now, try to install windows again.



Fix 4 – Using BCEDIT command

If you are right now on the error screen, just try this.

1 – On your screen just press Shift + F10 using your keyboard. A black command prompt window will come up on screen.

(Note: – If your Shift+F10 doesn’t work try using the Shift+FN+F10 )

2 – Just run the command pasted below in the cmd window which just popped up.

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes

3 – Now, run the commad given below to shutdown.

4 – Start your PC again.

It will bring the boot manager on the screen. Go to  recovery mode and restart the installation process again.

Fix 5 – Check your hard disk cables

sometimes the error stating “The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error loop” occurs due to faulty connection via hard disk cables. Check the cable connecting hard drive to motherboard and try to refix it. It fixed the problem in most cases like this.

Fix 6 – Disconnect All USB Devices attached with your PC

Many users suggested that disconnecting the USB devices helped in fixing the issue. Just disconnect whatever be the USB devices you have attached with your system and then try again.

Fix 7 – Update your BIOS

An outdated BIOS also sometimes result in a satiation like this. Just update your BIOS and see if it works as it has worked for some users.
