How Dong Nguyen abandoned $50k per day

Normally dotcom stories are heard from the valleys of sillicon valley. We always hear news how a young passed out grad from stanford founded something and some Bigger fishes in the industry poured their extra cash in his overvalued venture. Every day someone from USA etc. are building fortunes. But when someone from a third world country like vietnam starts making $50,000 per day from ad revenue and that too from a simple gaming app, the world is bound to take note. And also if this 28 year old  chain smoker delete that game at the peak of its success, the world is surely bound to be shocked.

Dong Nguyen was a game designer living in Hanoi, Vietnam and earned a living by a modest programming job. He grew up playing Ninetendo and super mario bros and wanted to build a simple game. Simple games which are hard to master always make a killing in the gaming world. In his past time he created a game Known as Flappy Bird. He uploaded this game on google play and iOS App Store on May 2013. As he had no marketing plan or budget backing him, he just tweeted about this game on his twitter account and no one noticed. Tweet flood washed his single lined promotion about his game. But, internet is a different world altogether. You can spend millions of dollars to advertise your product, but if your product lacks that extra cut needed to impress users, it will eventually wash away as soon as your marketing campaign stops. But if your product is having that x factor to engage users, it will surely shoot up on cloud number nine one day without spending a penny.

On November 2013, exactly 6 months after the birth of this game, twitter was stormed by tweets about this product. The addiction of this game spread like a virus. Soon people made it popular via social media and word of the mouth. On January 17th it was the number one app being downloaded on google app store. More than 50 million people downloaded Flappy Bird. As the success of this game rose like a meteoric star, his revenue also increased manifold times and reached $50,000 per day from ads. This sort of income getting transferred to your bank account without lifting a finger is the day dream of many including me. Who would not want this whopping income in a developing country with no hassles at all. This shy game programmer didn’t told his parents about the success of this game, but his parents got to know of his child stupendous success on TV.

But a strange thing happened on 10 Feb 2014. Dong Nguyen tweeted that in 22 hours, he will delete this game from Apple strores and Google play. Lot of people sensed a gimmick for hype in this tweet. It was not a gimmick, as in exactly 22 hours, he deleted that game from stores and shocked them all. Such was the popularity of this game that in those 22 hours more than 10 million people downloaded that game. Tech paparazzi wanted an answer but  he never replied to their answers.

Several speculations and numerous rumors surfaced on web including fake rumors of his suicide. Some said he was frightened by tax authorities, some said he was horrified by the copyright cases to follow by Big gaming corporations like creator of super mario bros (If you have played Flappy Bird you must have noticed the similarities of green pipes of mario and Flappy Bird). Also the cheep cheep enemy of Super mario Bros was very much similar to the Bird. But that was not the case as told by him in the only interview conducted by rolling stone magazine. He said it was messages sent by parents, school authorities and workers that affected him in a way that he deleted the game. Those messages requested him to take it down as its addiction was affecting lives. He took it down listening to the voice of his heart, the voice with which he once built this famous game.

Note:- He is still earning $10k per day from users who downloaded the game in past.
